Kangerlussuaq is a settlement in western Greenland and is famous for having Greenland’s largest commercial airport.

Back in 2008 I was lucky enough to spend one day there.. and here is my experience:

As soon I arrived at the airport I looked for a taxi to take us to our hotel. But of course there weren’t any taxis.
So I did what any other lost tourist does: got into the first queue I saw.
Luckily at the end of the queue I found a very helpful person who checked us in at the hotel (which was at the airport) and also showed us where we could rent bikes to explore the area.

It was around 50 euros to rent the bike for the day. Really expensive but totally worth it.

The plan was simple: Head north and explore as much as we could.

The place looked magical, unexplored.

And at every turn we would find a new beautiful landscape.

We took some sandwiches and stopped to have lunch at this beautiful place:

It was truly stunning.

Until....

Until...

We turned around and saw something moving.

I couldn't figure out what animal it was. It looked furry, it looked big, it looked brown.
So I stupidly just shouted: Oh My God, a bear!!!!!!!!

A bear who managed to get on a boat from Alaska to Greenland and live happily as a foreigner.
Because as you may know, Greenland has Polar Bears and not Brown Bears..

But you know, fear plus cold makes you forget any logic and see Brown Bears in Greenland.

So I packed everything as fast as I could and started cycling back as fast as I could, only to fall flat on my face and break the bicycle.

And I only found out what animal I have seen when I got back to the hotel and saw this picture :

So what I have seen was a Musk Ox.
Lots of tourists actually go there to see the Musk Ox and can't find it.
I saw it as thought it was a bear. hahaha

So after fixing my bicycle I ended the day getting back and exploring the places closer to the airport .

How pretty is this little church?

So that was my day in Kangerlussuaq.
A beautiful, wild and unforgettable  place in Greenland.

Hi Carol,

Your trip to Greenland looks great. My husband spent some time for work there too last year. He can't stop talking about it.
Hopefully one of these days I will be able to visit Greenland.

Do you remember from who you rented the bikes? I'm curious to know who rents bikes there.

Thank you very much for sharing your adventures!
